Decorating the Coastal Zone

Many plants which in nature live in damp and even the rehumidified places, along the banks of small rivers, streams and in dams, during warm time can very well live immersed in water on depth of 5 - 20 cm, but will winter better on dry soils. It is necessary to take into consideration, when selecting plants for decorating of the coastal zone. For example, such grades as Miscanthus sinensis - the most refined ornament of the coast of a garden reservoir. However in our conditions Miscanthus sinensis, preferring the sufficient humidity of soil in summer, is not able to bare flooding during the winter period. Therefore its grades are landed so that visually the bush has to be in the structure of a water garden, but settled down in a friable and nutritious ground outside the reservoir. Nowadays on sale it is possible to find grades with different terms of blossoming and different height: from 60 cm up to 2,5 m.

And of course the decoration of water garden is impossible without water-lilies. Water lilies-nimfei – are the most beautiful water creations. The grades cold-resistant water-lilies differ with the sizes and colours, the degree of doubleness and aroma of , the flowers form and colouring of leaves.

All the water-lilies are conditionally divided into groups: the small and dwarfish concern to group n, averages - to group m, large - to group t. Representatives of different groups require landing to different depth. Small and dwarfs will better will develop on the depth of 20 - 40 cm, average - 60 - 80 sm, and large need for normal development the depth not less than 80 - 100 cm. the Majority of grades successfully adapts, perfectly winters and plentifully blossoms at immersing on the depth of 60 - 80 cm. But it is impossible to land dwarfs more deeply than 40 cm – because they simply will not survive. And large water-lilies on the insufficient depth will roughly spread to the detriment of flowering and will quickly die.

High-quality nimfeis are not able to normally spread and blossom on the depth more than 1,5 m. In such conditions they will develop very slowly and soon can die. In this way such natural types as white water-lily (Nymphaea alba) and fragrant water-lily (Nymphaea. odorata) are unpretentious. They equally well grow blossom and winter as on depth of 40 cm. and on the depth of 2 m. However, they have a sufficient imperfection in comparison with high quality grades - they blossom not so long time and, as a rule, in the middle of summer. For comparison: high-quality water-lilies start usually blossoming in second half of May and blossom till steady colds, depending on the weather – possibly till September  or October.

All cold-resistant water-lilies are absolutely steady and winter-hardy in the conditions of midland of Russia and it is impossible to say the same about high quality grades of water-lilies, which have some similarity with tropical plants. They can be distinguished from cold-resistant water-lilies according to the number of signs: star-shaped flowers with the expressed crown of the stamens, highly raised over the water surface on strong stalks, usually of blue and lilac colouring with leaves with strongly cut edges.

The lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). Does not suit for landing in the moderate zone.  Even if you keep it during winter in non cold area, in summer it will not blossom showing all its potential anyway, it just does not get enough light and heat.
